Ten years ago, the Portuguese political system essentially revolved around two parties, the PS and the PSD. In the 2025 legislative elections, Chega, created in 2019, became the second largest force in Parliament, with 60 deputies. Other political groups have also emerged in recent years, increasing the fragmentation of the system, and a drop in trust in political institutions has helped create a scenario of instability.
