Rubble of a residential building that collapsed in Lebanon REUTERS The collapse of a five-story residential building in Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, this Sunday (8), has left six dead and seven injured so far, the city’s mayor informed Lebanese state media. At a press conference, the mayor also stated that there are still several people missing and warned that thousands of structures in the city are also at risk of collapse. “The problem is beyond the capacity of Tripoli city hall, and every life lost in the city is the responsibility of the State,” he accused. Rescue teams and residents are still working through the rubble to search for survivors. Initial information published by Al Jazeera states that the building housed around 20 families. Also according to Arabic TV, there was commotion between authorities and residents who gathered at the site. Lebanese Civil Defense agents asked the crowd to retreat and evacuate the area to facilitate the arrival of ambulances and heavy machinery, but the atmosphere was rebellious. “We repeatedly warned about the danger of these buildings, where was the state? Our families are now under the rubble,” a young man told Al Jazeera’s correspondent. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun says he is monitoring the situation in coordination with the Interior Minister. Which requested the full mobilization of emergency services and the provision of shelter to residents of the building that collapsed and neighboring buildings that were evacuated. This report is being updated.
