“Better him than me”, said Epstein about stabbing Bolsonaro

by Marcelo Moreira

The new files on the Jeffrey Epstein case, released on January 30, show a conversation recorded in a chat between the financier – who appears with his name blurred in the documents – and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. The dialogue reveals Epstein’s reaction upon being informed about the knife attack against Jair Bolsonaro, then candidate for President of Brazil, which occurred in September 2018.

According to the records, Bannon tells Epstein: “Bolsonaro was just stabbed in Brazil.” In response, the financier writes: “Better him than me”, followed, minutes later, by the continuation “Or you”.

The files released in January indicate that Epstein and Bannon maintained some frequent communication, with exchanges of messages on topics of internal United States politics and matters related to other countries. The conversations are part of the set of records associated with investigations and processes involving the financier.

The attack against Jair Bolsonaro took place on September 6, 2018, during a campaign event in Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais. According to the Federal Police, Adélio Bispo de Oliveira was the author of the stabbing and had “acted alone”, with political motivation, as concluded by two investigations concluded between 2018 and 2020.
