Opposition wing in Venezuela accepts “dialogue” with Chavismo

by Marcelo Moreira

A wing of the Venezuelan opposition led by deputy Henrique Capriles confirmed this Wednesday (4) that it will participate in a “dialogue” process called by the Chavista regime, under the interim leadership of Delcy Rodríguez. The initiative was presented in recent days by the Miraflores Palace, which is under constant US scrutiny.

According to a statement released on social media by deputy Stalin González, leader of the opposition Libertad parliamentary group, the decision was taken despite criticism from the group regarding the current political environment.

“We decided to attend responsibly. Participating in this space is not just any gesture, much less comfortable, but we have reached this moment with a deeply wounded Venezuela”, stated the parliamentarian.

The opposing bloc maintains that the resolution of national conflicts must occur through peaceful means and argues that previous experiences would indicate that Venezuela can only move forward through broad agreements and political commitments. The document highlights, however, that any negotiation would only be legitimate if it resulted in effective changes.

Also according to the political group, the reconstruction of democratic coexistence would require the end of practices associated with political persecution and the existence of politically motivated prisoners. In this context, the opposition wing claims that a possible amnesty law could represent a first step towards national reconciliation.

Last week, Delcy Rodríguez announced the drafting of an amnesty bill aimed at the release of political prisoners detained since 1999, a period that covers the regimes of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro.
