Representatives of the United States government and the Iranian regime are expected to meet next Friday (6), in Oman, to negotiate a nuclear agreement, according to American officials and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. The talks are scheduled to take place in the capital Muscat, at around 10 am (local time), as announced this Wednesday (4).
According to the agency Reutersa United States government official confirmed the meeting after Araqchi reported, in a publication on the X network, that nuclear negotiations with Washington were scheduled for Friday, with Oman acting as host and intermediary.
According to CNNthe announcement comes after days of uncertainty about the viability of the conversations, amid disagreements about the topics that would be discussed. Also this Wednesday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, “should be very concerned”, reinforcing Washington’s tone of pressure against the Islamic dictatorship.
The negotiations mark the first direct contact between representatives of the two countries since June last year, when negotiations were interrupted following the bombings carried out by the United States against three Iranian nuclear installations, amid the conflict between Iran and Israel.
The US government has reiterated that any new nuclear deal must include limitations on Iran’s ballistic missile program and Tehran’s support for regional terrorist groups such as Hezbollah – conditions that the Iranian regime rejects.
The negotiations come after repeated threats from President Trump of possible military intervention if an agreement is not reached that prevents Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. These threats were accompanied by the deployment of an American naval group to the Persian Gulf, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
