It’s #FAKE that Danish parliamentarians had a laughing fit over Trump’s campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize

It is #FAKE that the laughter crisis among Danish parliamentarians has to do with Trump’s demand for the Nobel Prize Reproduction A video is circulating on social media of members of the Danish parliament laughing during a session at the local Congress. The caption claims that the cause of the laughter crisis is United States President Donald Trump’s claim for the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s #FAKE. g1 🛑 What’s the fake post like? The video went viral on X, Instagram and TikTok at the end of January. It shows members of the Danish parliament having a fit of laughter in the country’s Legislative headquarters, while one of them, also laughing, tries to finish a speech into the microphone. The caption of an X post, in English, says: “Danish parliament laughs at Trump’s claim for Nobel prize.” Some posts include the following text, in Portuguese or other languages: “The Danish Parliament burst into laughter at Trump’s claim to have won a Nobel Prize. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen couldn’t stop laughing!” But that’s a lie. Although the images are real — and not the product of artificial intelligence (AI) or any digital manipulation — they appear out of context in these publications. In fact, the scene took place in 2019 and has no relation to Trump or the Nobel Prize. On that occasion, parliamentarians were debating a project to ban wild animals in circuses (read details below). The fake content went viral days after Trump blamed Norway, the country where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded, for not winning the prize in 2025, even after an intense campaign. The chosen one was the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. In a letter addressed to the Norwegian Prime Minister, the American president said: “given that your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped more than 8 wars, I no longer feel obliged to think exclusively about peace — although it continues to be predominant —, and now I can think about what is good and appropriate for the United States of America.” Analysts saw, in this passage, an allusion to the diplomatic crisis caused by Trump’s attempt to buy Greenland. Considered a strategic territory in the Arctic, the island has belonged to Denmark since 1814. Regarding this issue, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen gave a speech on January 20 in which she stated that “the worst is yet to come”. ⚠️ Why is the post fake? To find the origin of the original video, Fato ou Fake performed a reverse search for the images on Google Lens. This research serves to check whether the content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources – and in what context. The search led to reports published more than five years ago by the European press. One of them appeared on October 10, 2019 on the Ouest France website. The first paragraph describes: “The matter is serious. But take it easy – after all, we are talking about elephants. In Denmark, the government will soon introduce a new bill with the aim of banning the presence of wild animals in circuses by the end of 2019.” The following excerpt reads: “Meanwhile, in September, Mette Frederiksen’s government purchased the country’s last four circus elephants to offer them a peaceful retirement. The pachyderms’ names are Ramboline, Lara, Djunga and Jenny. One of the elephants had befriended a camel, so the camel was also purchased to keep them together.” The report ends by citing that “when the names of the animals were mentioned, […] the Danish Prime Minister burst out laughing”, infecting others present. The report includes the link to a video on the YouTube channel of the broadcaster Euronews, entitled (in French): “The Danish Parliament bursts into laughter with a story about elephants”.
