Images released by Chinese authorities show that the J-20A, an improved version of the J-20 stealth fighter, is undergoing a new phase of flight testing before delivery.
According to records, the aircraft may be equipped with a domestically developed WS-15 engine, which is expected to have higher thrust and improved performance.
The document was published by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation, a subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), which is responsible for manufacturing the J-20. According to information from state news agency Xinhua, the aircraft unveiled is an updated prototype of the J-20A, a direct evolution of the J-20 that entered service in 2017.
In the video, at least three aircraft can be seen taxiing with yellow zinc chromate primer paint. This coating is common in China’s aerospace industry and indicates that structural protection is applied during the pre-delivery testing phase and before the final coating of low-visibility materials is applied.
In addition to the new engine, the J-20A also incorporates improvements to its aerodynamic design and avionics systems. These updates are part of China’s efforts to improve the performance of its flagship twin-engine heavy stealth fighter and strengthen its technological capabilities in military aviation.
