Two scientists linked to the development of the mobile nuclear shelter Kub-M were detained in Russia on suspicion of accepting large-scale bribes.

According to information released on Saturday, January 31, by RBC, the head of the All-Russian Research Center for the Improvement of Protective Measures (VNII GOChS), Nikolai Posokhovand the deputy head of the institute, Igor Sosunovbecame defendants in a criminal case.

According to sources from security agencies interviewed by RBC, the investigation intends to ask the Zamoskvoretsky District Court in Moscow to apply house arrest to Posokhov, while Sosunov must remain in pre-trial detention. If convicted, both could face sentences of up to 15 years in prison. At this time, authorities have not released additional details about the allegations.

The case is handled by the Russian Investigative Committee, which has already forwarded the formal petition to the court to define precautionary measures.

What is the Kub-M bunker

The Kub-M modular shelter was developed by VNII GOChS on order from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. Work began in 2015, as previously reported by Posokhov himself in an interview with RBC.

The Kub-M standard model is made up of two main modules: an accommodation space with capacity for up to 54 people and a technical unit. Series production began in autumn 2024 in the city of Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

According to its developers, the system offers protection on three levels:

  • shelter against explosions and fragmentation of conventional weapons
  • anti-radiation protection
  • protection against nuclear, chemical and biological weapons

In maximum configuration, the Kub-M would be able to withstand even a direct hit from modern missiles, such as the HIMARSin addition to mitigating the effects of a nuclear attack.

The arrest of those mainly responsible for the project casts uncertainty over the future of the program, which had been presented by Russian authorities as a strategic civil protection solution in high-intensity conflict scenarios.
