A repair center for the Ukrainian Army’s Marder infantry fighting vehicles has been opened in northern Romania, near the border with Ukraine.

The structure, called Service Hub Satu Mare, was implemented quickly and has the aim of accelerating the recovery of vehicles damaged in combat, maintaining the operational readiness of the fleet in use in the conflict.

According to Rheinmetall, the new hub is fully equipped to carry out complex repairs, including damage caused by combat actions. The strategic location, close to Ukraine, reduces transport times and allows for a rapid return of armored vehicles to active service.

Germany has already delivered 140 Marder 1A3 units to Ukrainian forces and has publicly announced its intention to supply further batches. As part of the so-called “ring exchange” scheme, the Chilean government has agreed to sell 30 Marder 1A3 vehicles from Chilean Army stockpiles to replenish the German inventory.

The vehicles transferred by Rheinmetall were previously in service with the German Ground Forces and are undergoing extensive overhaul and modernization processes before shipping to Ukraine. This phase ensures that the armored vehicles arrive at the operational theater in conditions suitable for use.

Developed in the 1960s under commission from the German Armed Forces, the Marder it became one of the best-known infantry fighting vehicles in Europe. The model is equipped with a 20 mm automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm MG3 coaxial machine gun, offering fire support and protected transport capabilities for mechanized troops.
