US President Donald Trump stated that “Cuba will not be able to survive”, after ordering the imposition of tariffs on countries that sell oil to the island.
The statement was given to journalists during the presentation of the documentary by American First Lady, Melania Trump, this Thursday (29).
According to the republican, the measures that led to the fall of the Cuban regime are not intentional, but the isolation is a reflection of the island’s authorities having treated its people poorly. Trump even classified the country as a “failed nation”.
Trump’s new statements come hours after he signed an executive order to impose tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba. “I consider that the situation in relation to Cuba constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, and I hereby declare a national emergency with respect to this threat”, argued the president when announcing the executive order.
This Thursday, the Financial Times newspaper released a report in which it points out that Cuba only has enough oil for 15 to 20 days at current levels of demand and domestic production.
