The Republican also said that “Americans will be able to visit Venezuela very soon.” According to Trump, the reopening was decided after a conversation with the country’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez. The FAA, which regulates aviation in the US, removed four air traffic notifications this Friday, including one about the closure of the South American country’s airspace. Trump also stated that major American oil companies are heading to the country for new prospecting projects. The president of the United States does not have the legal authority to close another country’s airspace. With the positioning of American aircraft carriers and other military personnel in the Caribbean Sea region since August, however, the message was in practice equivalent to a closure of airspace. The recommendation led several airlines to suspend flights that crossed Venezuelan territory or had the country as their destination. On January 3, an American military operation kidnapped Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and took him to a New York prison. Since then, Venezuela has been governed by Chavista Delcy Rodríguez, as interim president. Trump speaks to the press on the White House lawn, this Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Washington.
