Ronaldo Caiado: “When the white smoke comes out, we will know who was chosen to be the candidate”

by Marcelo Moreira

After leaving União Brasil, the party for which he intended to run for president, the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado, appears to be living the political version of a conclave.

Caiado announced, last Tuesday (27), his affiliation with the PSD, and posted a video on the networks alongside three other “cardinals” of the party, the governors of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior, and of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite.

The three are tipped to run in the presidential elections and are now awaiting the “white smoke” from Gilberto Kassab, president of the party, as a sign that “habemus papam”, or a presidential candidate, will represent the party in the electronic ballot box in October this year.

For Ronaldo Caiado, the dynamic of choosing between one of the three names arises from an attitude of selflessness.

“It’s a gesture of total detachment. There’s no such thing as an internal dispute. There’s nothing like that. When the white smoke comes out, we’ll know who was chosen to be the candidate.”

Caiado’s former party, União Brasil, announced a federation with the Progressive Party, in addition to signaling a possible alliance with the PL for possible support for Flávio Bolsonaro. In this game, Caiado realized that he would not have space.

“The PSD will launch a candidate for president. I am a pre-candidate and, based on several criteria that will be defined by Kassab and the party, they will decide which candidate should lead the campaign for the presidency of the Republic. Now my chances are much greater.”

The president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab, said the same to Ronaldo Caiado, Eduardo Leite and Ratinho Júnior: whoever has a more competitive candidacy and consolidates himself in the polls will be nominated. The PSD’s objective is to avoid a purebred ticket.

Talks with other parties to choose a vice candidate have already begun. One of the PSD’s bets is to seek voters outside of polarization, but Caiado has already guaranteed that he does not accept being vice president.

“I’ve never competed for this position in my life. It’s not a gesture to say: ‘Look, this position is inferior’. It’s not my profile”, he said.
