Sales of electric cars have exceeded sales of internal combustion engine cars in all 27 European Union (EU) countries for the first time, ACEA data shows. This milestone was reached in December 2025, when electric vehicles gained a market share of 22.6%, 0.1 percentage points ahead of gasoline-only vehicles.
The gap widens even further when including the UK and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Combining data from the EU, UK and EFTA, electric cars had a market share of 26.3% in December, while gasoline cars accounted for 21.7% of the total.
Meanwhile, over the year, conventional gasoline cars remained in the lead, with a market share of 26.1% in the EU+UK+EFTA region, and electric models at 19.5%.
Still, ACEA data shows gas-powered cars’ market share fell by 6.9% last year, while electric vehicles grew by 4.1% compared to 2024.
Meanwhile, diesel engines continue to show significant decline, with their market share dropping from 10.4% in 2024 to 7.7% last year.
Overall, hybrid vehicles maintained their lead in the EU+UK+EFTA region last year, capturing a market share of 34.4%. Plug-in hybrid vehicles exceeded diesel vehicle sales for the first time in history, accounting for 9.6% of the total.
