In support of Denmark, the European Union said it will defend itself against any form of “coercion” and announced plans to expand investments in security in the Arctic, including the purchase of military equipment adapted to the polar environment. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has been mediating a possible agreement between the US and Denmark. According to The New York Times, the proposal on the table involves handing over areas of the island to Washington for the construction of military bases.
