The move reinforced the American military presence in the region amid rising tensions with Iran. The aircraft carrier and accompanying ships were sent as the Iranian government suppressed large-scale demonstrations. Despite not having taken direct military action against Iran, Trump insists that all options remain on the table. Last week, Trump said that American warships were being sent “as a precaution” and that he was closely monitoring the situation in the country. “We’ll see what happens,” he said at the time. According to Centcom, the group led by Abraham Lincoln’s mission is to prevent destabilizing actions and protect American interests in the region. The command coordinates U.S. military operations in the Middle East and parts of Central Asia. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baqai, criticized possible foreign intervention and stated that the country trusts “in its own capabilities”. “The arrival of such a warship will not affect Iran’s determination and seriousness in defending the nation,” he said, referring to the USS Abraham Lincoln.
