BMW has filed a patent for technology that can prevent drunk drivers from operating their vehicles via the app Digital Key.
According to the site Auto Blogthe idea is that the digital key app, responsible for starting the car, can acquire data from a breathalyzer connected to the smartphone.
If the driver refuses to take the test or fails to demonstrate that their BAC is below the legal limit, the car can be immobilized indefinitely.
In order not to leave the driver completely in difficulty, BMW suggested that the digital key app could still be used to unlock doors, activate infotainment and climate control systems, thus reducing the risk of a drunk user being left out in the cold or falling asleep while waiting for a taxi or ride.

This technology has raised questions about how an individual’s data might be used and whether breathalyzer results would be recorded and perhaps even sold to insurance companies. It should be remembered that GM had been sued for selling its users’ data.
However, this patent also highlights that humans have proven time and time again that they are not always reliable at making safe decisions. Therefore, if the German manufacturer’s idea can save some people’s lives, it cannot be so bad.
