Germany and Italy deny joining Trump’s Peace Council

by Marcelo Moreira

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, stated this Friday (23) that they will not be able to join the Peace Council created by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in the current format, citing barriers in the constitutions of the two countries.

“In the way the Peace Council is currently structured, we cannot accept its governance structures in Germany for constitutional reasons,” Merz said at a press conference alongside Meloni in Rome.

“However, we are, of course, prepared to explore other forms — new forms — of cooperation with the United States of America, if the objective is to find new formats that bring us closer to peace in different regions of the world,” added the German chancellor, according to information from Reuters.

Meloni followed the same line, remembering that the Italian Constitution prevents the country from participating in international organizations in which one member (in this case, the United States) has more power than the others.

“We are ready [para entrar no conselho]. But, of course, there are objective problems with the way the initiative is structured,” said the Italian prime minister. “I also spoke to the American president about this. Maybe we can try to resolve these issues.”

The Peace Council, to which Trump invited several leaders, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will initially oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after more than two years of war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, but the American president wants the council to act as an intermediary in other conflicts around the world.

Other countries, such as Spain and France, have already announced that they will not participate in the Peace Council, with Madrid and Paris claiming that the main reason is that the group is outside the UN framework – accused by Trump of having “never” helped him resolve any conflict.
