The President of China, Xi Jinping, spoke by telephone with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and reinforced support for Brazil amid “turbulent moments”. The connection was confirmed this Friday (23) by the Chinese state agency, although the Brazilian government has not yet officially commented.

According to information released by the agency, the Chinese leader defended that the two countries act to “maintain the role of the United Nations (UN)” in defending the common interests of both nations and the Global South. Also according to the statement, Xi told Lula that “China is willing to continue being a good friend and partner to the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

According to Túlio Amancio, reporter for Rede Bandeirantes, Brazilian government sources reported that Brazil and China were aligning a joint position contrary to the advice proposed by former President of the United States, Donald Trump. The strategy would be a “bloc non-adhesion” by the invited countries that have not yet responded, with the aim of taking advantage of the current crisis context to promote a reform of the UN Security Council.
