Trump launches “Peace Council” in Davos The United States, Ukraine and Russia begin this Friday (23) the first trilateral meeting to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine, which is about to complete four years. The summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, runs until Saturday. This is the first time since the start of the war that the three countries have sat down together to negotiate peace—under Trump, the US has assumed the role of the only country capable of seeking an end to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters this Friday that negotiators will discuss territorial control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. ✅ Follow g1’s international news channel on WhatsApp “Donbas is a central issue. It will be discussed in the format that the three parties deem appropriate in Abu Dhabi, today and tomorrow,” Zelensky said in an online press conference. Before this Friday’s meeting, Russia once again demanded the annexation of the entire Donbas region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Ukrainian troops must withdraw from the region in any form of agreement for Vladimir Putin to agree to end the war. “It is well known that Russia’s position is that Ukraine and the Ukrainian Armed Forces must leave Donbas. This is a very important condition,” Peskov said. Until the last update of this report, all the details of the negotiations in Abu Dhabi are not yet known, only that it does not initially involve the leaders of the three countries. Zelensky stated that “the Russians must be prepared to reach compromises.” Russia, however, has been willing for a few weeks to end the conflict, as long as it is on its terms. For Ukraine, it is unacceptable to cede territories that are still under its control to Russia. Documents almost ready The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and the President of the USA, Donald Trump, shake hands during a meeting on the sidelines of the 56th World Economic Forum (WEF), in Davos Press Service of the Presidency of Ukraine/Disclosure via REUTERS Zelensky stated in a post on the social network World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting lasted about an hour and was “very good”, according to the USA. The leaders discussed the supply of air defense equipment and progress in peace negotiations. With Thursday’s progress, Zelensky said the documents to end the war with Russia are almost ready. On Thursday, Zelensky followed Trump’s line and criticized European allies for their inaction in the face of the conflict. “Europe remains a fragmented kaleidoscope of small and medium powers. The problem is the mentality. Only actions create a real order. Europe can and must be a global order and needs Ukraine’s independence to be able to defend itself tomorrow.” The Ukrainian leader also accused Russia of trying to “freeze Ukrainians to death”, in reference to daily Russian attacks on his country’s infrastructure. Meeting in Moscow Also this Thursday, Trump’s special envoy for the Ukraine war, Steve Witkoff, will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as part of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Witkoff indicated that a deal could be close, without giving further details. According to him, “there is only one issue left between Ukraine and Russia” to be resolved. Trump also suggested this Thursday that negotiations to end the war may have advanced – however, he has said this other times in the past. “We ended eight wars, and I believe the end of another is coming very soon,” said the American president.
