Trump says the US was ‘stupid’ for ‘giving back’ Greenland after World War II European leaders will hold an emergency meeting this Thursday (22), in Belgium, to discuss US President Donald Trump’s threats to Greenland. The meeting was held even after the North American assured that he would not use force to take the island and retreated from the application of tariffs to European countries. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp ▶️ Context: According to the president of the European Council, António Costa, the bloc’s leaders will address issues of sovereignty, support for Denmark and Greenland and concerns about the trade agreement between the United States and the European Union. The meeting was called on Tuesday (20), the same day that Trump leaked a private message sent by French President Emmanuel Macron. In the text, Macron said he did not understand the North American’s stance on Greenland. Also on Tuesday, Macron used a speech at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, to state that this “is not the time for imperialism and colonialism”. He also defended that the European Union does not bow to the “law of the strongest” and criticized the “bullying” of one country against another. 🗣️ Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday (21). In his speech, he once again made threats to Europe and NATO. Although he said he would not use force to take Greenland, the president said he could retaliate against the military alliance. In the same speech, Trump called Denmark “ungrateful”, said Europe “is not going in the right direction” and referred to Greenland several times as “a piece of ice”. He also stated that the island should have come under US control at the end of World War II, when American troops occupied the territory. Later, Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Even before the meeting ended, the president published on a social network that the United States and NATO had advanced an agreement on Greenland. Trump did not provide details about the negotiations. He only said that the agreement would be “forever” and would serve the interests of the United States and Europe. 🚨 The New York Times newspaper revealed that, in the meeting with Rutte, the possibility of delivering small portions of Greenland to the United States was discussed. If this happens, the Americans would have control of areas of the island to install military bases. Trump has stated that Greenland is essential for the security of the United States, including for the construction of the so-called “Golden Dome”. The military structure is being planned to intercept missiles launched against North American territory. Given the progress in negotiations, Trump also announced that he had given up imposing 10% tariffs against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. The tariffs would be applied in retaliation for these countries’ opposition to U.S. interests. Economic tension United States President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum on January 21, 2026 REUTERS/Denis Balibouse The Greenland issue has exposed a rift between the United States and Europe, which are long-time allies. Trump has used economic threats to pressure the bloc. This time, the European Union began to study forms of retaliation. On Wednesday, the European Parliament suspended the analysis of a trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. The treaty provided, among other points, for the suspension of tariffs on all American industrial products exported to the bloc. Before that, on Sunday (18), the European Union held an emergency meeting. At the meeting, France suggested the use of an anti-coercion instrument known as a “commercial bazooka”. 👉 The commercial bazooka allows the imposition of higher tariffs on US products, as well as restrictions on investments, services and trade with North American companies. The bloc is also considering applying a tariff package worth 93 billion euros (R$578 billion) on American imports. The measure could come into force as early as February. The United States trade envoy to the World Economic Forum stated on Tuesday that a possible decision by the European Union to activate the trade bazooka “would not be prudent” and would have “natural consequences”. In addition to the economic issue, European authorities want to expand the debate to reduce the bloc’s dependence on the United States in other areas, mainly security.
