The flight was destined for Switzerland, where Trump was to participate in the World Economic Forum.

According to a White House statement, the problem was deemed minor, but the decision to turn around was made as a precaution. “After takeoff, the Air Force One crew detected a minor electrical problem. Out of an abundance of caution, the aircraft returned to Joint Base Andrews. The president and his team will board another plane and continue their journey to Switzerland”indicates the official note.

Although the type of failure was not specified, journalists on board reported that the lights in the press cabin briefly went out shortly after takeoff. No injuries or immediate risks to flight safety were reported.

What we know about Air Force One

Currently, two aircraft serve as Air Force One, both of which have been in service for nearly four decades. Produced by Boeing, these aircraft are subject to constant maintenance, but the replacement program is experiencing successive delays.

Unlike most modern commercial aircraft, Air Force One has four engines and is equipped with in-flight refueling capabilities, allowing it to stay in the air for as long as necessary. The aircraft was also designed to operate in extreme conditions, including nuclear conflict scenarios, ensuring that the president can continue to exercise command of the armed forces from the air.

Last year, Qatar gave Trump a Boeing 747-8 luxury jet to be included in the presidential fleet. This donation sparked broad political and institutional scrutiny. Currently, the aircraft is undergoing a refurbishment process to meet the strict security and communications requirements required for transporting the head of state of the United States.
