Afterwards, he puts music on a speaker and starts dancing. At different points in the video, he gives the finger to the camera and the statue. Also on Tuesday, Madeira police stated that they “intercepted” the suspect with the help of information from the public and sent him to receive psychiatric help. As a police source told the Portuguese press, the individual “is known in Funchal for similar situations”. “The Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police informs that, as a result of the events that recently occurred near the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo, in Funchal, it was possible to successfully resolve the situation. (…) In conjunction with the Health Authority, a referral order to the psychiatric emergency was issued, which was promptly complied with”, stated the police. According to the video, the statue caught fire for a few seconds and did not appear to suffer structural damage. Police have not spoken publicly about the condition of the monument. The police also said that the “identification and interception” of the suspect occurred quickly and his arrest was carried out respecting his physical integrity and that of others. The ministry did not say whether the young man was booked. Cristiano Ronaldo had not publicly commented on the incident until the last update of this report. Funchal is the 40-year-old player’s hometown and home to the main museum, created and financed by him, about his career. On his social networks, the suspect identifies himself as a resident of the island of Madeira and said that his action against the statue would be “God’s last warning” for Cristiano Ronaldo.
