Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado stated this Tuesday (20), in Washington, USA, that the Chavista regime is “manipulating the situation” in the country and that “it is not true that it has released the majority of political prisoners”. The statement was made after a meeting with the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS).
According to María Corina, Venezuelan authorities announce releases that do not materialize. According to the opponent, “they announce that they are going to release someone and then that doesn’t happen”, which she classified as “daily torture” for family members awaiting news of the detainees.
As reported to the press after the meeting with the Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, María Corina stated that the situation in Venezuela puts the instruments of the inter-American system to the test.
“If there is any occasion in the history of America that justifies and tests the Inter-American Charter and the Inter-American System, it is the situation in Venezuela. It is time to act”, he declared.
The Venezuelan leader also defended that the OAS deal with what she called the “complete dismantling of the repressive system” of the regime. According to her, there is no possibility of political transition as long as arbitrary arrests and structures of repression persist. “It is not possible to talk about transition with repression,” he said, adding that it is necessary to dismantle torture centers and release political prisoners.
At another point in her agenda in Washington, María Corina stated that there is still an alternative to move towards democracy in Venezuela. According to the opponent, it is necessary to look ahead to “save lives”.
