Three nursing technicians are suspected of killing three patients who were admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in the Federal District and are currently at the disposal of the Justice Department. Police will also investigate another 20 deaths considered suspicious.
According to initial investigations, the scheme was led by Marcos Vinícius Silva Barbosa, aged 24, with the help of two other employees. He would have taken advantage of moments when the unit’s system was open in the name of a doctor to prescribe a medication that, in high doses, can cause heart attacks in patients.
He then applied the medicine to the victims and performed cardiac massage when the heart began to fail. After being arrested, the suspects denied the murders, but ended up confessing to being responsible after being confronted with images from the local security cameras. The motivation for the crimes is still unknown. Authorities were informed about the suspicious deaths by the health unit’s management, which carried out an internal investigation at the end of last year.
