United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on France after French leader Emmanuel Macron indicated that he will not accept the invitation to join the Peace Council for the Gaza Strip.
Trump said the new tax could be levied on imports of wine and champagne. The head of the White House stated that this will happen if he feels that the Frenchman is being “hostile”. When asked about Macron’s position that he would not join the council, the republican said that “no one wants him, because he will be out of power soon”. Trump even mentioned that this will happen in “a few months”, however, the French president’s term only ends in May 2027.
France reported that it “does not intend to respond favorably” to Trump’s invitation, as the group’s format “raises many questions, especially related to respect for the principles and structure of the United Nations, which in no way can be questioned.” Part of the world criticizes Trump’s idea regarding the Council because, supposedly, it takes powers that currently belong to the United Nations.
