The North American Aerospace Defense Command announced it will transfer aircraft to Pituffik Space Base, the only U.S. military base located in Greenland.
The information was published on the command’s official account on the X social networking site.
According to the announcement, the planes are to reach the base soon. The facility’s infrastructure recently received approval for modernization.
Operations will be conducted in cooperation with air assets based in the continental United States and Canada, supporting NORAD’s long-term planned activities based on defense cooperation between these countries and the Kingdom of Denmark.

NORAD reported that the actions had been coordinated with the Danish government and that all forces involved were operating with the required diplomatic consents. The Government of Greenland was also informed in advance of the planned events. According to the command, this type of operations are regularly carried out as part of the defense of North America.
The transfer takes place in the context of increased international attention on Greenland following recent statements Donald Trump regarding the strategic interest of the United States in this territory.

The US president’s statements triggered political and diplomatic reactions from Denmark and the Greenlandic authorities, who again emphasized that the territory’s sovereignty is not negotiable. American military representatives emphasize, however, that the transfer of aircraft is part of previously planned NORAD activities and does not constitute a formal change in defense policy.
Pituffik Space Base is a key element of the early warning system against air and missile threats. About 150 American soldiers serve at the base in cooperation with allies. The installation was established during World War II and gained strategic importance during the Cold War, when it was known as Thule Air Base. In 2023, it came under the control of the United States Space Force and received its current name.
The Pentagon plans to invest up to $25 million in modernizing the base, with particular emphasis on rebuilding and improving the runway.
NORAD is responsible for the control of airspace and near-Earth space, early warning of air or missile attacks, and air and missile defense of the United States and Canada using radars, fighters, early warning aircraft, and specialized satellites.
