The North American Aerospace Defense Command has announced that it will move the aircraft to Pituffik Space Base, the only United States military base located in Greenland.

The information was published by the command on its official account on the X social network.

According to the announcement, the planes will arrive at the base in the near future. The base’s infrastructure recently received approval for modernization.

The operations will take place in cooperation with air assets deployed on the territory of the continental United States and Canada and will support the long-term planned activities of NORAD, based on defense cooperation between the two countries and the Kingdom of Denmark.

NORAD stated that the activity was coordinated with the Danish government and that all forces involved were operating with the necessary diplomatic clearances. The government of Greenland was also informed in advance about the planned events. According to the command, similar operations are conducted regularly as part of the defense of North America.

The moves come in the context of increased international attention on Greenland following recent statements Donald Trumpwhich related to the strategic interest of the United States in this territory.

The US president’s remarks prompted political and diplomatic reactions from Denmark and Greenlandic authorities, who reiterated that the territory’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation. However, US military officials emphasize that the transfer of the aircraft is part of previously planned NORAD activities and does not represent a formal change in defense policy.

Pituffik Space Base is a key point in the early warning system against air and missile threats. Approximately 150 members of the United States Armed Forces serve on the base in cooperation with allies. The base was established during World War II and gained strategic importance during the Cold War when it was known as Thule Air Base. In 2023, it came under the control of the United States Space Force and received its current designation.

The Pentagon plans to invest up to 25 million US dollars in the modernization of the base, with the priority being the restoration and improvement of the runway.

NORAD is responsible for the control of airspace and near outer space, for early warning of air or missile attacks, and for the air and missile defense of the United States and Canada, using radar, fighter aircraft, early warning aircraft, and specialized satellites.
