It is #FAKE that video shows crowds during protests in Iran; registration took place in 2022 in Berlin Reproduction A video of a crowd raising Iranian flags on an avenue is circulating on social media. The subtitles claim that the scene was recorded during the recent protests in the country. It’s #FAKE. fake seal g1 🛑 What’s the video like? Published this Saturday (17) on X, the post has the following caption (in English): “The BBC reports that the protests are decreasing. Meanwhile, in Iran.” Superimposed on the video is a text box that says (also in English): “The courage of people who refuse to kneel.” The video shows aerial footage of a crowd on a large avenue surrounded by trees. It is possible to identify Iranian flags raised by protesters. The scene, however, was recorded in Berlin in 2022 (read more below). Since the end of December 2025, Iran has faced a wave of protests, motivated by dissatisfaction with the country’s economic situation. The local government began to repress the protesters and blocked access to the internet. The repression generated a worldwide reaction, and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened to attack Iran. ⚠️ Why is this a lie? Despite being real — and not an artificial intelligence (AI) production, for example — the video was used out of context. The recording was recorded on October 22, 2022, in Berlin, Germany, during protests in solidarity with the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died on September 16 of that same year in Iran, after being arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code. The case sparked outrage on social media and a wave of demonstrations. On that occasion, around 80,000 people gathered in the German capital to show support for the protests in Iran. After being arrested in Tehran, Mahsa Amini fell into a coma and died three days later in hospital. Family members stated that the young woman was attacked by police officers upon arrest. According to a medical report from the Islamic Republic, the cause of death was related to a brain disease, not a beating. To find the origin of the video used out of context, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool and fragmented the material into several frames (static images). Then, he selected one of these “photos” and did a reverse search on Google Lens. This research serves to verify what content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources – and in what context. The result identified that it was shared on October 22, 2022 on social media, with captions identifying the act in Berlin. Fato ou Fake found similar aerial images in a report from the newspaper “O Globo” with this title: “Mahsa Amini: 80 thousand people take to the streets of Berlin in support of protests in Iran”.
