Trump says he “doesn’t feel obligated to think only about peace”

US President Donald Trump stated this Monday (19) in a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, that, after not being recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize, “he no longer feels obliged to think only about peace”.

“Dear Jonas: Considering that your country decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped eight wars, I no longer feel the obligation to think only about peace, although it will always be predominant, but now I can think about what is good and appropriate for the USA”, says the message leaked by the network’s correspondent PBS News Nick Schifrin.

Furthermore, the Republican leader linked the threat of US annexation of Greenland to the fact that he did not obtain the distinction.

“Denmark is not capable of protecting this territory against Russia or China, and furthermore, why would it have a supposed ‘property right’? There are no written documents, just the fact that a ship arrived there hundreds of years ago, but we also sent ships,” he added.

In the letter, Trump also considered that he had done “more for NATO than anyone else since its creation.”

“Now NATO should do something for the US. The world will not be safe unless we have full and absolute control of Greenland,” he added.

Støre confirmed this Monday to the Norwegian newspaper VG having received a text message from Trump the day before and clarified that it was a response to another that he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb had sent.

“In the message to Trump, we explained our stance on increasing tariffs on Norway, Finland and other countries. We stressed the need to de-escalate the exchange and requested a telephone conversation between Trump, Stubb and I throughout the day. Trump’s response arrived shortly after we sent our message. It was his decision to share it with other leaders of NATO countries,” Støre told the newspaper.

The prime minister also highlighted that Norway’s position is clear: Greenland is part of the kingdom of Denmark and support for it is “total”.

“We also advocate that NATO, in a responsible manner, reinforce work for security and stability in the Arctic. With regard to the Nobel Peace Prize, I explained to Trump several times, clearly, what is already known: that it is an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian government, that awards the prize”, he highlighted.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2025 distinction to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado “for her tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela.”

However, in a meeting at the White House on January 15, Machado presented Trump with his medal as a demonstration of gratitude for the American operation that deposed Nicolás Maduro at the beginning of the month, although Oslo has already recalled that the distinction is non-transferable.

Earlier on Monday, Trump considered that the time had come to “eliminate” the “Russian threat” from Greenland.

“For 20 years, NATO has told Denmark that it must eliminate the Russian threat from Greenland. Regrettably, Denmark has not been able to do so. The time has come, and it will be done,” Trump wrote on his own social network, Truth Social.
