The government of Denmark decided this Wednesday (14) to expand, together with allies from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the military presence and the carrying out of exercises in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory that is currently the target of strategic interest of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, who is pushing for the annexation of the island.
According to information from the news agency NTBconfirmed by Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, officers from the Armed Forces of Sweden and Norway – NATO member countries – have already started arriving on the island to participate in the so-called “Operation Arctic Resistance”. The initiative is seen as a way to placate Trump’s advances, who justified his interest in the annexation of Greenland by citing the need for national defense against the influence of Russia and China.
According to an official statement from the Danish Ministry of Defense, the country sent new planes, ships and soldiers to Greenland, as well as reinforcing the protection of installations considered essential.
According to Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, Greenland’s security has fundamental significance for the Kingdom of Denmark and its allies. The Danish government plans to invest around 42 billion Danish crowns (approximately 6 billion euros) in new security equipment for the region, with drones, satellites and vessels to strengthen surveillance in the Arctic enclave.
