International broadcasters reported this afternoon that Washington began the preventive withdrawal of part of its military personnel from the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar, classifying the measure as “preventive” given the worsening regional scenario. The United Kingdom also confirmed the withdrawal of some of its military personnel from the same base.
Trump said in an interview at the White House on Wednesday that he had received information that the Iranian regime “has no plans for executions” of detained protesters, but said the United States will “watch and see” before taking the military option against the country off the table. The president had already warned that he would take “very strong action” if Iran proceeded with executions.
This afternoon, Germany advised the country’s airlines to avoid Iranian airspace due to the risk of escalating the conflict, while Spain and Italy recommended that their citizens leave Iran. The United Kingdom announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Tehran and the withdrawal of all diplomatic staff.
The protests in Iran began at the end of December, driven by the economic crisis and the collapse of the local currency, and evolved into demonstrations against the Islamic regime. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), more than 2,000 protesters have already been killed during the regime’s repression.
