Greenland PM again rejects US annexation

by Syndicated News

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said this Tuesday (13) that, if the island had to choose now between a government from Denmark and the USA, it would choose to remain part of the Nordic country.

“Greenland doesn’t want anyone to own or control it. If we had to choose between the US and Denmark right now, we would choose Denmark. This is not a time for internal disagreements, but for unity,” Nielsen said at a press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

On Monday (12), the Greenlandic government had already expressed its rejection of any possibility of Donald Trump’s government annexing the Arctic island, in addition to announcing that NATO will intensify its defense efforts in the region, given that the island “is part of the Kingdom of Denmark”.

Several European countries, led by Germany and the United Kingdom, are evaluating the possibility of NATO increasing its presence in Greenland.

Denmark confirms meeting with JD Vance and Rubio on Greenland

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, confirmed this Tuesday that he will meet this Wednesday (14) with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to discuss Washington’s interest in the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, and that the American Vice President, JD Vance, will act as host of the meeting.

Rubio had announced a few days ago that he would meet with Rasmussen – who will be accompanied by Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt – this week, but without confirming the day of the meeting, which will take place at the White House.

Rasmussen’s announcement came at the end of a meeting of the Danish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Denmark’s relationship with the USA, which was also attended by Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

“The context of (tomorrow’s) meeting is that we want to discuss this entire discussion in a room where we can look each other in the eye; that’s why I have no further comments”, limited himself to saying Rasmussen, who avoided answering questions from the press.

In turn, Poulsen revealed that, next Monday, he will travel to Brussels with Motzfeldt to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in order to discuss security in the Arctic.
