Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated this Monday (12) that the situation in the country is ‘under complete control’, following the increase in violence linked to protests against the economic crisis and the government, which entered its third week. Human rights organizations estimate more than 500 deaths and at least 10,600 arrests since the protests began.
The protests represent the largest mobilization against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime in more than three years and have been marked by repression by security forces, in addition to internet access blocks, which have lasted more than 80 hours. The minister promised that the service will be restored gradually, in coordination with security agencies.
On Sunday, Donald Trump declared that Iran had approached the United States to discuss a possible new nuclear agreement, following threats made in response to the repression of protests. In his statements this Monday, however, the Iranian foreign minister did not comment on the possibility of resuming negotiations.
