Protests in Iran continue even without internet The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Saturday (10) that Iran is “seeking freedom” and the Americans are “ready to help”, amid the wave of protests that have hit the country in recent days. “Iran is looking for FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The United States is ready to help!!!”, Trump wrote on the Truth Social network, without giving further details. The comment was published a day after Trump stated that the US could intervene in the crisis if the Iranian regime killed protesters who protested peacefully. The protests in Iran have left at least 72 people dead and 2,300 arrested, according to the Associated Press, citing the North American association Human Rights Activists News Agency. The Iranian government’s repression intensified this Saturday, according to the AFP agency. The country has been without internet access for 48 hours, following a nationwide blackout imposed by authorities, according to cybersecurity NGO Netblocks. Country is at war, says Iranian government Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, criticized on Friday the “vandals” who, according to him, are behind the protests, and accused the United States of inciting them. “We are in the midst of war,” declared Ali Larijani, one of the ayatollah’s advisors and head of the country’s main security agency, denouncing “incidents orchestrated abroad.” The US, in turn, called the accusations “delusional” and reflect “an attempt to divert attention from the enormous challenges facing the Iranian regime at home”, according to a US State Department spokesperson. This Saturday, state television showed images of the funerals of members of the security forces killed during the protests. In the city of Shiraz, in the south of the country, attendance at the funeral rites was significant. The Iranian government has not faced a protest movement of this magnitude since the marches organized in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating the women’s dress code. These demonstrations come at a time when Iran is weakened after the war with Israel and the blows suffered by several of its regional allies. Furthermore, in September, the UN reinstated sanctions related to the country’s nuclear program. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, on December 22, 2025 REUTERS/Jessica Koscielniak
