Families denounce Chavismo for not releasing several prisoners

by Syndicated News

The Committee of Mothers in Defense of Truth, a group that brings together family members of political prisoners in Venezuela, criticized the country’s interim regime for having announced that several detainees would be released on Thursday (8), but only 11 gained freedom, according to information from local NGOs.

In a statement sent to the Efecto Cocuyo website, the committee said that none of the family members of the group’s members had been released as of this Friday morning (9).

“Several family members are in the vicinity of the Tocorón, Tocuyito and Las Crisálidas prisons, as well as in several GNB police stations [Guarda Nacional Bolivariana] and the police, without any indication so far that our relatives will be released in the next few hours, despite what was announced yesterday by the president of the National Assembly,” said the committee.

The group added that more than 200 people remain in prison exclusively for participating in protests against the then dictator Nicolás Maduro after the fraud in the 2024 presidential election.

On Thursday, the president of Venezuela’s National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, brother of the country’s interim dictator, Delcy Rodríguez, said that “a significant number” of political prisoners would be released yesterday.

However, NGOs have confirmed for now that only 11 people have been released, including five Spanish citizens (including the activist Rocío San Miguel, who have dual citizenship) and an Italian.

A bulletin from the NGO Foro Penal, released at the beginning of the week, indicated that there were 806 political prisoners in Venezuela.
