The Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, signed, this Friday (9), the administrative measure that authorizes the automatic renewal of the National Driving License (CNH) for good drivers.
According to the ministry, the decision provides that responsible drivers in traffic do not need to take in-person exams, go to Detrans or pay any additional fee to renew their document.
The process will be automatic and digital, through the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) system, with authorization available on the Brazilian CNH application.
Who is entitled to automatic driver’s license renewal?
According to the ministry, drivers registered in the National Positive Driver Registry (RNPC), who have not committed infractions in the last 12 months, are entitled. In this case, the Good Driver seal will appear in the Brazilian CNH application.
Drivers who do not have infractions registered during this period will have their driver’s license automatically updated in the system, when the document expires, without the need to pay new fees and without having to carry out in-person exams.
Authorization to participate in the RNPC can be done through the Brazilian CNH application or through the Senatran Portal.
Rules for drivers
The measure also establishes that drivers over 50 years of age will only be able to use the benefit of automatic renewal once.
The following are not eligible to receive the benefit:
- Drivers aged 70 or over;
- Drivers whose driver’s license validity is reduced on medical recommendation, in cases of progressive illnesses or conditions that require health monitoring.
Deadlines
Brazilian traffic legislation establishes that, when the driver’s license expires, the driver still has a period of 30 days to drive with the expired document. This period is essential for automatic renewal to work. “Senatran processes renewals considering this legal tolerance period”.
Therefore, the first automatic renewals will begin to be released from January 9th. This is because the provisional measure came into force on December 10, 2025, and the system will respect the 30-day period that citizens have to use their driver’s license after its expiration date.
Therefore, drivers whose licenses expired on or after December 10th will receive automatic renewal within this schedule.
