Lula talks with Canadian Prime Minister and discusses transition of power in Venezuela

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke this Thursday (8) with the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, about the situation in Venezuela. The contact was announced by the Canadian government. In a statement, Carney’s office said that the two leaders reaffirmed support for a peaceful transition process in the country. According to the text, the process must take place in a negotiated manner and under the leadership of the Venezuelans themselves. “Leaders emphasized the need for all parties to respect international law and the principle of sovereignty,” the Canadian government said. Venezuela was attacked on Saturday (3) by the United States. The operation resulted in the kidnapping of dictator Nicolás Maduro. According to the Venezuelan government, the action also left 100 dead, including civilians. Earlier, Itamaraty reported that Lula also spoke with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, about the situation in Venezuela. According to the Brazilian government, the two agreed that the crisis must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, with respect for the will of the Venezuelan people. Still according to Itamaraty, Lula and Petro stated that the United States’ action constitutes “an extremely dangerous precedent for regional peace and security and for the international order”. “The two leaders expressed great concern about the use of force against a South American country, in violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the sovereignty of Venezuela,” says the note. On Saturday (3), Lula released a statement condemning the attack. He stated that the bombings and Maduro’s capture represent an affront to Venezuelan sovereignty and create a “dangerous precedent” for the international community. Brazil and 21 other countries condemned the operation during a UN Security Council meeting on Monday (5).
