Belgium will deploy the MQ-9B SkyGuardian on its first operational missions from 2026, initially focusing on NATO’s maritime operations.

This remotely piloted aircraft system will support ‘Operation Sea Guardian’ to enhance maritime surveillance and support security operations in the Mediterranean Sea.

SkyGuardian’s deployment will take place in Italy and will be integrated with NATO’s other contributions, including participation in Belgium’s AWACS fleet and the deployment of Belgian military officials to an operations headquarters located in the United Kingdom. Brussels is also assessing synergies with EUNAVFOR Aspides, the EU maritime operation operating in the Red Sea, and is expected to deploy the BNS Leopold I in late 2026.

The Belgian Air Force received its first MQ-9B aircraft in September 2023 and plans to achieve initial operational capability by the end of 2026. Although this aircraft is not a dedicated naval version, it is already equipped with sensors suitable for marine environments, and new capabilities will be added under a $589.7 million investment plan through 2034. This investment plan also includes advanced sensors for surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.
