The United States Navy has awarded a $20.3 million contract to Collins Aerospace to modernize high-power communications systems on E-6B aircraft, known as “doomsday planes.”

The agreement provides for the production and delivery of three transmitter upgrade kits, reinforcing the strategic capacity of the fleet responsible for critical nuclear command and control missions.

Work will be performed in Richardson, Texas, with completion scheduled for June 2027, using resources from the Navy’s fiscal year 2026 aircraft acquisition budget. The contract modification was awarded without competition and is part of a previously established agreement, being administered by the Naval Air Systems Command, Maryland.

Responsible for ensuring secure communications between US leadership and strategic forces such as ballistic missile submarines, the E-6B has been undergoing gradual upgrades to maintain its operational relevance.

Current improvements focus on very low frequency transmission equipment and other specialized systems, the technical details of which have not been disclosed for security reasons.
