Brazil and 5 other countries condemn US attack on Venezuela

by Syndicated News

This Sunday, Itamaraty released a joint position note from the governments of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain, in which the countries express “deep concern and rejection” regarding the United States attack on Venezuela to capture and remove dictator Nicolás Maduro from power.

“Such actions constitute an extremely dangerous precedent for regional peace and security and for the international order based on norms, in addition to putting the civilian population at risk”, says the text, after stating that military actions contradict principles of the United Nations Charter, such as the prohibition of the use and threat of the use of force, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.

In the note, the countries also express concern about “any attempt at government control, administration or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources, which is incompatible with international law and threatens the political, economic and social stability of the region”.

This Saturday, after the attack on Venezuela, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that American companies will explore oil in the country. He also reported that the presidency will be held by Maduro’s vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez.

Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain defend, in the note, that “the situation in Venezuela must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, through dialogue, negotiation and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people in all its expressions, without external interference and in accordance with international law”.

This Saturday (3), the day of the attack, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared that the USA “crossed an unacceptable line”. “These acts represent a very serious affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty,” he said in a statement.

“Position of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain regarding the events that occurred in Venezuela — January 4, 2026

The Governments of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain, given the gravity of the events that occurred in Venezuela and reaffirming their attachment to the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, jointly express the following positions:

1. We express our deep concern and rejection of the military actions carried out unilaterally in the territory of Venezuela, which contradict fundamental principles of international law, in particular the prohibition of the use and threat of the use of force, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Such actions set an extremely dangerous precedent for regional peace and security and the rules-based international order, as well as putting the civilian population at risk.

2. We reiterate that the situation in Venezuela must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, through dialogue, negotiation and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people in all its expressions, without external interference and in accordance with international law. We reaffirm that only an inclusive political process, led by Venezuelans, can lead to a democratic, sustainable solution that respects human dignity.

3. We reaffirm the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, built on mutual respect, the peaceful resolution of disputes and non-intervention, and we call for regional unity, beyond political differences, in the face of any action that puts regional stability at risk. Likewise, we urge the United Nations and relevant multilateral mechanisms to use their good offices to contribute to the de-escalation of tensions and the preservation of regional peace.

4. We express our concern regarding any attempt at government control, administration or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources, which is incompatible with international law and threatens the political, economic and social stability of the region.”
