At least 30 people died and several others were kidnapped after armed men attacked a market in Niger state, Nigeria, local police reported this Sunday (4). Efforts are being made to rescue the kidnapped victims,” said Abiodun. Witnesses said that the armed men arrived on motorbikes and opened fire indiscriminately. The violence is part of a series of attacks that began on Friday (2) in the nearby villages of Agwarra and Borgu. We are currently recovering bodies.” The Nigerian military did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The attack came weeks after gunmen captured more than 300 children and staff from a Catholic school in Nigeria’s central state. These victims were released after almost a month in captivity. This type of banditry has increased in northwest and central Nigeria, with armed groups carrying out mass killings and kidnappings in rural communities. Security forces have had difficulty containing the violence despite ongoing operations. Witness Khalid Pissa said the gunmen attacked communities in Kasuwan Daji and also in neighboring Chukama and Shanga. Pissa put the death toll at 40.
