The new mayor of New York, socialist Zohran Mamdani, from the Democratic Party, decided, upon taking office this Thursday (1st), to revoke decrees signed by his predecessor, including the executive order that adopted the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) on anti-Semitism within the municipal administration.
According to local press reports, Mamdani ordered the annulment of all executive orders issued by former mayor Eric Adams after September 26, 2024, the date on which Adams was indicted in a federal corruption case, which has now been closed. The revocation took effect immediately.
Among the annulled decrees is the executive order signed by Eric Adams in 2025, which officially aligned the New York City Council with the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, a reference adopted by governments, universities and international organizations to identify and confront contemporary manifestations of anti-Semitism. The IHRA definition recognizes that certain forms of political hostility towards the State of Israel – such as its demonization – can be constituted as modern expressions of anti-Semitism.
According to the ReutersMamdani stated that the annulment of the decrees signed by Adams after his indictment aims to ensure an institutional “fresh start” for the new administration.
In addition to the decree on the IHRA, another that was revoked by Mamdani prohibited public servants and municipal agencies from participating in boycott initiatives against Israel. According to ReutersMamdani had already expressed support for the right to boycott the Israeli State and defended that the city of New York not restrict this type of position.

According to the organization Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), which monitors and combats anti-Semitism around the world, the revocation of the IHRA alignment decree could harm the ability of New York authorities and institutions to identify and respond to anti-Semitic demonstrations in the city.
Upon taking office this Thursday, Mamdani became the first New York mayor to swear into office on the Quran.
