The light multi-role Mi–34M1 helicopter has begun flight tests equipped with the Russian VK–650V engine, marking a new stage in the program led by the Russian Helicopters holding, part of the state-owned Rostec group of companies.

According to the officially published information, the first flight of the prototype lasted about ten minutes and was carried out by test pilot Sergey Barkov from the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center. During the flight, the stability and maneuverability of the helicopter, as well as the load on the main systems, were tested during level flight and performing turns.

The Mi–34M1 is designed for passenger transport, surveillance, flight training and air sports tasks. It is a light, single-engine, multi-purpose helicopter that wants to appear in a market segment that has been mainly dominated by foreign types.

The helicopter uses the VK–650V turboshaft engine developed by United Engine Corporation through Klimov. According to those in charge of the program, the engine worked fine during the first flight and proved to be fully compatible with the helicopter’s on-board systems. The VK–650V is cited as the first Russian engine designed for light helicopters with a maximum take-off weight of up to four tons.

In addition to the new propulsion system, the Mi–34M1 received domestically produced avionics and on-board systems. The aim is to reduce dependence on imported parts and to offer a domestic alternative in a market where the operation of foreign helicopters, especially in terms of maintenance, has become more and more expensive.

In a statement issued to the press, Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov stated that the start of tests is a significant step forward for the Russian aerospace industry, highlighting the new type’s good maneuverability, ease of handling and simple maintenance. According to him, the next stage of the program includes certification tests and preparation for serial production.

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation also called the start of flight tests an important event for the country’s aviation industry, stressing that the project proves the ability of the national industry to develop modern aircraft based on its own technologies.

As the Mi–34M1 program progresses, the industry expects the helicopter to complement Russia’s current rotary-wing fleet and expand options for civilian operators and training purposes.
