Published on Thursday (25) on X, where it reached more than 80 million views, the post has the following caption, in English: “This is how Dubai celebrates Christmas”. The night footage shows a square – and it is possible to identify the Burj Khalifa, the tallest skyscraper in the world, located in Dubai. In the sky, there is a drone show with red and white luminous points, forming the figure of a moving Santa Claus. In the comments section, some users were impressed by the content and wrote messages such as: “how incredible”; and “wow!” However, Santa Claus was created with CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) – read details below. Additionally, the post received this “community note”: “This video is a computer-generated montage and has been circulating since 2023. Dubai hosts real concerts, but this event never took place. The video exists only in this specific angle and is reposted repeatedly every year as if it were real.” ⚠️ Why is this fake? The author of the content was identified in the comments of the misleading post as filmmaker Fawez Zayati, a Tunisian specialist in VFX (visual effects) content. Wanted by Fato ou Fake, he sent a message explaining that the Santa Claus animation was inserted into a real video originally recorded on the streets of Dubai. “This is real footage from Dubai with integrated CGI particle simulation. The video was created on December 16, 2023.” In an Instagram post from January 20, 2024, Zayati explained that he used two editing applications to create the image of Santa Claus and stated that he deleted the content from his profile when users began to believe that the scene was real: “Whenever you see something on the internet, before commenting or sending it to your friends, stop for a moment, read the username and see what the creator has already done. At least read the description.” To find the origin of the content, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool and fragmented the material into several frames (static images). Then, he selected one of these “photos” and did a reverse search on Google Lens. This search serves to check what content had been previously reproduced – and in what context.
