Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of trying to attack one of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s homes in the Novgorod region with 91 long-range drones this Monday (29).
The chancellor promised harsh retaliation and said the alleged Ukrainian action would provoke a Russian change in the ongoing peace negotiations led by US President Donald Trump. “These reckless actions will not go unpunished,” he said, in a statement reproduced by the agency Interfax.
Lavrov also did not make it clear whether Putin was at the residence at the time of the alleged attack, which would have occurred between Sunday and Monday, but stated that there was no damage to the property.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the accusation, saying it was “another lie” by Russia to hinder peace efforts. “Russia is acting again, using dangerous statements to undermine all the achievements of our joint diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team. We continue to work together to bring peace closer,” he wrote on X.
Trump met with Zelensky in Florida on Sunday (28). Both signaled progress towards a peace agreement, although without concluding any pact and acknowledging that “thorny issues” still need to be resolved.
