The Federal Police reported this Saturday (27) that it is serving ten house arrest warrants, using an electronic ankle bracelet, for those convicted as part of the coup plot, which sought to keep former president Jair Bolsonaro in power.
The decision, by Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, comes after the frustrated escape attempt by Silvinei Vasques, former director of the Federal Highway Police and one of those convicted by the STF.
Felipe Martins, Bolsonaro’s former advisor, was one of those arrested by order of Moraes.
On a social network, Martins’ lawyer, Jeffrey Chiquini, reported that federal police officers attended the former advisor’s home, in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, to implement the house arrest measure.
The lawyer considers the prison to be “abusive”, as it does not meet the criteria of criminal law. “There is no concrete indication of a risk of flight and, as any layman knows, the Constitution prohibits punishing a person for the acts of third parties,” he said.
Filipe Martins and Silvinei Vasques are part of Nucleus 2 of the coup plot. Martins was sentenced to 21 years, including 18 years and 6 months in prison, initially in a closed regime and a fine, and Vasques to 24 years and 6 months, including 22 years in prison, also in a closed regime.
In addition to Paraná, the PF reported that court orders are being complied with in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Bahia, Tocantins and the Federal District, with support from the Army in part of the efforts.
The PF also reported that, in addition to house arrest, the STF ordered precautionary measures such as the ban on the use of social networks and contact with other people being investigated, the delivery of passports, the suspension of firearm possession documents and the ban on visits.
