He criticized the actions of Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who at the time headed the Department of Government Efficiency. “In just 71 days, the President of the United States has done so much damage to Americans’ security, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy, and even our aspirations as a people,” he said. “These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such.” In the following hours, the senator attacked a series of government measures, read the report of a detained Canadian immigrant and cited historic speeches by other American politicians. At one point, his voice became hoarse and he had difficulty picking up a piece of paper that had fallen to the floor. The Democrat was helped by another senator. The former record for the longest speech in the Senate dates back to 1957. That year, Senator Strom Thurmond spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an unsuccessful attempt to block the expansion of federal voting rights protections for black people.
