According to a report delivered to Pope Leo XIV, released this Thursday (04), in a vote, the Vatican commission was against the possibility of women becoming deacons.
The vote count revealed that, out of eight people, seven voted against women holding the lowest hierarchical position in the Catholic Church. This decision was justified by the fact that historical research and theological investigation excluded this possibility.
Within Catholicism, deacons are those whose main activity is to help at masses and administer baptisms and weddings.
If approved, this would be the first rise of women to a hierarchical position in Catholicism. The Vatican, for its part, said the decision is not irreversible, but that further historical research and theological investigation will be necessary.
