Croatia has taken a decisive step in its military modernization by approving the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks, currently the most advanced model in the Leopard family.

The decision was confirmed on October 30, when the Croatian Parliament’s Defense Committee approved four new arms programs, totaling investments worth 1.9 billion euros.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ivan Anušić, who published the information via his LinkedIn page, the package includes not only the 44 Leopard 2A8s, but also 18 CAESAR Mk2 wheeled howitzers, 420 heavy off-road Tatra trucks and a national drone defense system.

The first Leopard 2A8 has already been presented

On November 19, KNDS Germany – the manufacturer of the Leopard 2A8 – officially presented the first example of the new series at an international defense event. The presentation was attended by representatives of the Croatian Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces to underline the progress of negotiations and Zagreb’s commitment to the new program.

1.3 billion euro package includes tanks, simulators and logistical support

According to the specialist publication ESUT, the contract for the 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks is worth around 1.3 billion euros. This amount includes not only the vehicles, but also training simulators, spare parts, maintenance packages and full logistical support.
The deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2030 and will strengthen Croatia’s military capabilities at a time when the country is replacing tanks previously given to Ukraine.

Croatian industry will be directly involved in the program

The agreement also envisages the integration of Croatian companies in the assembly and maintenance of the new armored vehicles. The companies involved include Končar and Đuro Đaković, which contribute both to the production of components and to support throughout the entire life cycle of the vehicles.
Additionally, the package includes comprehensive crew training and up to 15 years of technical support, including maintenance of strategic spare parts inventories.

Funding supported by European programs

The modernization of the Croatian fleet is financed both from the national budget and through European funds to strengthen collective defense. The country is thereby strengthening its integration into the strategic initiatives of the EU and NATO.

With the arrival of the new Leopard 2A8 tanks, Zagreb will make a significant advance in its land defense capabilities, aligning itself with the highest technological standards currently used by European armies.
