Croatia has taken a decisive step in military modernization by approving the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks, the most advanced model currently available in the Leopard family.

The decision was confirmed on October 30, when the Defense Committee of the Croatian Parliament approved four new weapons programs which together amount to investments of 1.9 billion euros.

According to Vice President and Defense Minister Ivan Anušić, who released the information via his LinkedIn page, the package includes not only 44 Leopard 2A8s, but also 18 CAESAR Mk2 wheeled howitzers, 420 Tatra off-road heavy tactical trucks and a national drone defense system.

The first Leopard 2A8 has already been presented

On November 19, KNDS Germany — the manufacturer of the Leopard 2A8 — officially unveiled the first example of the new series at an international defense event. Croatian representatives from the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces participated in the presentation, underlining the progress of the negotiations and Zagreb’s commitment to the new program.

1.3 billion euro package includes tanks, simulators and logistical support

According to the trade publication ESUT, the contract for the 44 Leopard 2A8s is worth around 1.3 billion euros. This amount includes not only vehicles, but also training simulators, spare parts, maintenance kits and full logistical support.
Deliveries are expected between 2028 and 2030, strengthening Croatian military capabilities as the country replaces tanks previously handed over to Ukraine.

Croatian industry will have a direct role in the program

The agreement also provides for the integration of Croatian companies in the assembly and maintenance process of the new armored vehicles. Among the companies involved are Končar and Đuro Đaković, which will contribute to both the production of components and support throughout the life cycle of the vehicles.
Furthermore, the package includes comprehensive crew training and technical support for up to 15 years, including maintenance of strategic component stocks.

Funding supported by European programs

The modernization of the Croatian fleet will be financed both from the national budget and through European funds intended for strengthening collective defense. In this way, the country strengthens its integration with the strategic initiatives of the EU and NATO.

With the arrival of the new Leopard 2A8s, Zagreb will make a significant step forward in land defense capabilities, aligning itself with the most advanced technological standards currently adopted by European armies.
